What Is the Surgery EOR Exam?
The Surgery End of Rotation™ exam is administered by PA programs at the end of the clinical rotation. Although the rotation is often nicknamed “general surgery,” the PAEA blueprint is titled simply Surgery — it spans the full surgical spectrum, including trauma, vascular disease, and perioperative management, not just general surgery cases. It contains 120 multiple-choice questions — 100 scored and 20 unscored pretest items — with a two-hour time limit. Questions span the full blueprint, including task areas like diagnosis, diagnostic studies, clinical therapeutics, and clinical intervention.
Aligned to the Current Surgery Blueprint
The Surgery EOR was rebuilt by PAEA in September 2024 — and it is the model the other six exams follow in their July 2026 updates. It introduced the modern content-area and task-area structure, including the Professional Practice task area, before any other rotation exam had it. This review is aligned to that current blueprint, so question distribution matches the exam you will actually sit.
