Fact 2: Category 1 and Category 2 are not interchangeable

Category 1 CME has been formally reviewed and designated by an approved accreditor. Category 2 CME is medically related education that has not been formally designated for Category 1 credit.

The traditional PANRE consists of four 60-question blocks. Each block allows 60 minutes, with scheduled breaks and a tutorial period. The total appointment is approximately five hours.

Preparation should include timed blocks that approximate this structure. Reviewing isolated questions while checking references will not adequately prepare you for the pacing, concentration, and decision-making required on test day.

How the Same Review Course Supports Both Paths

The assessment formats differ, but the clinical content overlaps. A focused PANRE review course can support either pathway when you use it according to your testing format.

For PANRE-LA preparation:

1. Complete smaller question sets consistently.
2. Use rationales to identify recurring knowledge gaps.
3. Practice locating information quickly in one or two reliable references.
4. Track errors by organ system and clinical task.
5. Avoid waiting until the end of the quarter.

For traditional PANRE preparation:

1. Start with a baseline mixed question set.
2. Review each major NCCPA content area.
3. Use timed, closed-book 60-question blocks.
4. Practice changing topics rapidly.

The course includes more than 2,500 board-style questions, 15 body-system modules, five full-length practice examinations with 240 questions each, answer explanations, cited sources, and 30 months of access. You can study by organ system early in your preparation and transition to mixed practice later.

Although PANCE prep courses are primarily designed for initial certification, many of the same study methods apply to PANRE preparation: active recall, clinical vignettes, error tracking, and timed practice. However, a dedicated PANRE course is more appropriate when your goal is recertification.

The Value of 100 AAPA Category 1 CME Credits

The PANRE Review Course provides up to 100 hours of AAPA Category 1 CME through the PANRE Clinical Review Module. These credits apply specifically to the PANRE Review Course. They do not automatically apply to every CME Review Courses product.

Common PANRE Review Mistakes

Treating PANRE-LA as an open-book shortcut

References can support your reasoning, but they cannot replace preparation. Five minutes is not enough time to search broadly for every question.

Waiting until the final year

Traditional PANRE preparation becomes compressed when started only a few weeks before the examination. PANRE-LA also requires ongoing participation. Start early enough to identify weak systems and correct them.

Studying only familiar conditions

Your daily clinical practice may not expose you to every NCCPA content area. Review renal medicine, dermatology, infectious disease, psychiatry, hematology, endocrine disorders, and other areas outside your routine practice.

Reading without answering questions

Passive review creates familiarity but does not prove that you can apply information to a clinical vignette. Use questions to test diagnosis, treatment, contraindications, screening, and next-best-step decisions.

Ignoring the testing format

For PANRE-LA, practice five-minute decisions with limited reference searching. For traditional PANRE, complete timed, closed-book blocks.

Practice Question: Traditional PANRE Style

Clinical vignette: Your patient is a 68-year-old man with atrial fibrillation who presents with sudden left-sided weakness and aphasia. Symptoms began 75 minutes ago. HR is 118/min and irregular, BP is 174/96 mmHg, SaO₂ is 97% on room air, and glucose is 104 mg/dL. Noncontrast CT shows no hemorrhage.

What is the most appropriate next step?

A. Administer IV alteplase after confirming no contraindication
B. Start warfarin immediately
C. Perform a lumbar puncture
D. Administer aspirin and defer further evaluation

Correct answer: A. Administer IV alteplase after confirming no contraindication.

The patient has an acute ischemic stroke with disabling neurologic deficits and presentation within the thrombolysis window. IV thrombolysis is appropriate after rapid assessment of contraindications.

Warfarin is not an immediate treatment for acute stroke. Lumbar puncture is unnecessary and delays treatment. Aspirin may be used when thrombolysis is not given or after the appropriate post-thrombolysis interval, but it is not the best initial answer here.

Practice Question: PANRE-LA Style

Clinical vignette: Your patient is a 27-year-old woman with lower abdominal pain, fever, dyspareunia, and mucopurulent cervical discharge. Temperature is 38.3°C. Pelvic examination demonstrates cervical motion tenderness and bilateral adnexal tenderness. Pregnancy testing is negative.

What is the most appropriate treatment?

A. Oral fluconazole alone
B. Empiric treatment for PID with coverage for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and anaerobes
C. Immediate diagnostic laparoscopy in all cases
D. Observation until cervical cultures return

Correct answer: B. Empiric treatment for PID with coverage for gonorrhea, chlamydia, and anaerobes.

Pelvic inflammatory disease should be treated empirically when pelvic or lower abdominal pain is accompanied by cervical motion, uterine, or adnexal tenderness and no better alternative diagnosis is identified.

Fluconazole treats vulvovaginal candidiasis, not PID. Diagnostic laparoscopy is reserved for selected cases, including diagnostic uncertainty or failure of outpatient treatment. Waiting for cultures increases the risk of complications and does not reflect standard initial management.

Bottom Line

Choose PANRE-LA if you prefer distributed testing, immediate feedback, reference-supported questions, and a structured quarterly process. Choose the traditional PANRE if you prefer one proctored examination, closed-book testing, and a concentrated preparation period.
