A repeated PANRE-LA topic is a built-in opportunity to reassess your clinical reasoning. Use it to check whether you can recognize the same clinical issue, apply the relevant concepts, and improve your response. Then use focused study to address any knowledge gaps that remain.
A repeating PANRE-LA topic is a progress check
The PANRE-LA includes topics that may appear again after an earlier assessment. According to the NCCPA’s PANRE-LA information, when a topic repeats, the better of the two responses is counted and the weaker response is removed from the score.
That makes a repeat useful as a progress check: revisit the clinical concept, identify what you missed or were uncertain about, and consider whether your reasoning has changed. It does not replace a broader study plan. A repeated question can show you where to focus, but preparation across the exam’s clinical content areas still matters.
For the current official rules and administration details, consult NCCPA’s certification maintenance page and Key Dates page. Those pages are the source of truth if requirements or dates change.
A repeat topic versus a course question module
| Repeating PANRE-LA topic | Course question module | |
|---|---|---|
| What it offers | A chance to revisit a clinical topic and assess your reasoning | Focused practice organized by body system |
| How to use it | Identify what changed in your understanding | Review explanations and use practice performance to guide further study |
The two serve different purposes. The PANRE-LA repeat is part of the longitudinal assessment. A course module provides additional structured practice for the content area you want to strengthen.
Build a targeted study plan from the repeat
After answering a repeated topic, make a short note of the clinical decision point involved. Was the challenge recognizing the likely diagnosis, choosing a diagnostic test, or selecting the next step in management? Write down the key clue and the reasoning you want to remember.
Then use targeted questions to revisit that content area. Read the rationale, not just the answer. If you chose an incorrect response, identify why it was less appropriate for the patient’s presentation. If you answered correctly but were uncertain, treat the topic as an area to review rather than assuming it is mastered.
The PANRE Review Course offers practice by system, with 1,810 questions across 15 body-system modules and five 240-question mock exams, totaling 1,200 mock-exam questions. Together, that is a 2,500+ question bank. The course is available for 30 months and includes up to 100 AAPA Category 1 CME credits through the PANRE Clinical Review Module.
The question modules can support focused review when you notice a pattern in your performance. For example, if a repeated topic exposes uncertainty in musculoskeletal emergencies, return to that system’s questions and work through the explanations. Use the practice to reinforce decisions you may need to make in clinical care as well as on an exam.
CME gift cards
CME gift cards are paid Amazon or Apple add-ons available at checkout. Select an amount from $100–$1,500 in $100 tiers. The add-on cost is added to the course purchase price and processed with the course in one transaction using CME funds. These are paid options, not free gifts.

Gift cards are emailed within 2–3 business days of purchase; you do not have to finish the course first. Gift card packages are nonrefundable, and the add-on itself does not earn CME credit. Check your employer’s CME policy before purchasing. CME Review Courses is not affiliated with Amazon or Apple.
Choose the study resource that fits your next step
If you want to explore the PANRE Review Course, visit the course product page. A paid gift card add-on can be selected at checkout. You can also try the free PANRE review test drive before deciding whether the course fits your study needs.
For additional PA exam preparation, try PAtopia on the web, or find the app on the iOS App Store and Google Play. PAs comparing pance prep courses can use the PAtopia test drive to explore another study option.

Practice question: Musculoskeletal, compartment syndrome
Your adult patient is evaluated after a lower-leg crush injury. The patient reports worsening, severe pain despite analgesia. The affected compartment is tense, and passive stretch of the toes worsens the pain. HR is elevated; BP and SaO2 are stable. What is the most appropriate next step?
Correct answer: Immediate surgical consultation for emergent fasciotomy.
A. Elevate the limb well above the level of the heart and reassess later
B. Apply a tighter circumferential dressing to limit swelling
C. Obtain MRI before initiating treatment
D. Continue analgesia and observe for improvement
A and B can compromise perfusion or delay definitive care. C adds unnecessary delay when the presentation is strongly concerning for compartment syndrome. D does not address the time-sensitive threat to tissue perfusion. Fasciotomy is the definitive treatment when acute compartment syndrome is clinically established.
Practical exam note: Do not let stable vital signs or a palpable pulse falsely reassure you. In a patient with a concerning presentation, prioritize urgent surgical evaluation rather than delaying care for imaging.
CME and eligibility caveats
The up-to-100-credit designation applies to the PANRE Clinical Review Module, not the Pharmacology course. Approval is valid 8/26/2026 to 8/26/2027; AAPA reference number CME-2016187. To claim credit, review all module content, complete the post-test with a score of 70% or higher, and complete the evaluation. Claim only credit commensurate with participation; the certificate states the precise credit earned. The program-level accreditation statement covers 14 modules and 468.75 credits, not this individual module.
PAs may log AAPA Category 1 CME toward NCCPA requirements as permitted by NCCPA policy, and must continue meeting NCCPA CME requirements while participating in PANRE-LA. Nurse practitioner acceptance of AAPA Category 1 credit varies by state; verify with your state board of nursing. The activity meets AAPA Category 1 requirements and counts as Category 2 CME for physicians.
