The traditional PANRE is a single, proctored exam administered at a Pearson VUE test center. It contains 240 multiple-choice questions divided into four 60-question blocks. The PANRE-LA is a longitudinal assessment completed online over multiple quarters. Each quarter includes 25 questions, and participants may use printed or online references during the assessment. Common Mistakes in PANRE Review
Mistake 1: Using only PANCE prep courses
Many PANCE prep courses are designed for a physician assistant student preparing for initial certification. PANRE preparation is different. You need a review strategy that emphasizes broad general medical knowledge, chronic disease management, acute care, preventive care, and the NCCPA content distribution for recertification.
A PANCE resource may still help with foundational review, but it should not be your only preparation tool.
Mistake 2: Studying by preference instead of content distribution

Mistake 4: Avoiding full-length practice exams

Complete at least one practice exam under realistic conditions. Use a timer, limit interruptions, and review every missed or guessed question afterward.
Mistake 5: Treating Category 1 CME as interchangeable across products
The 100 hours of AAPA Category 1 Self-Assessment CME described in this article apply to the PANRE Review Course. The separate Pharmacology CME Review Course is designated for 12 hours of AAPA Category 1 CME in Pharmacology.
The pharmacology course does not provide the 100-hour PANRE course designation. Physicians may generally claim this type of activity as Category 2 CME, and NP acceptance of AAPA credit varies by state, board, and employer. Nurse practitioners should verify eligibility before purchase.
Facts About AAPA Category 1 Credit
AAPA Category 1 CME is not simply a label for any online medical education. The activity must meet applicable AAPA criteria and carry an appropriate designation.
For the PANRE Review Course:
- The activity is designated for 100 AAPA Category 1 Self-Assessment CME credits.
- You should claim only the amount of credit that reflects your participation.
- An electronic evaluation must be completed before credit is awarded.
- NCCPA applies an additional 50% weighting to eligible self-assessment CME for certification maintenance. The weighting is applied by NCCPA when the credits are logged.
- The course is intended to support both PANRE preparation and CME completion.

This patient has diabetic ketoacidosis with volume depletion and hemodynamic compromise. Begin aggressive isotonic crystalloid resuscitation, assess serum potassium, and start IV regular insulin once potassium is known to be safe. If K⁺ is significantly low, replace potassium before insulin.
IV sodium bicarbonate is not routine therapy and is generally reserved for extreme acidemia. Subcutaneous long-acting insulin alone does not provide the controlled treatment required for DKA. Hemodialysis is not initial therapy. Dextrose is added later when serum glucose falls while ketogenesis is still being treated.
