PANRE-LA and traditional PANRE test the same broad clinical knowledge, but they place assessment on different schedules. PANRE-LA spreads questions across recurring quarterly windows. Traditional PANRE concentrates the assessment into one proctored exam session. Neither option eliminates study time; each format requires a routine that fits its deadlines and testing conditions.
Start by checking your eligibility and dates in the NCCPA key dates calendar. Then schedule question practice and CME work around the format you chose.
| Routine factor | PANRE-LA | Traditional PANRE |
|---|---|---|
| Assessment schedule | 25 questions per quarter across 12 quarters | One scheduled, proctored 240-question exam |
| Timing | Each quarterly window is approximately 10 weeks | Work backward from your individual exam date |
| Overall requirement | At least 8 quarters are required | Prepare for the full exam-day sitting |
| References | References are allowed | Practice under timed exam conditions |
| Routine emphasis | Recurring study and quarterly completion | Timed blocks, review cycles, and exam-day stamina |
The PANRE-LA’s recurring schedule rewards consistent preparation. NCCPA administers 25 questions in each of 12 quarters, with each window lasting approximately 10 weeks. References are allowed, but that does not remove the need to know the material. Locating an unfamiliar topic during an assessment takes time and can make it harder to use references effectively.
Use this approach for each quarter:
At least eight quarters are required. Treat every quarter as part of an ongoing plan rather than assuming you can catch up at the end. Check NCCPA guidance for your certification cycle, including any participation requirements that apply to you.
Traditional PANRE has a fixed exam date, so build your routine backward from the appointment in your NCCPA account. The exam contains 240 questions in a proctored session. Your preparation needs to cover both clinical decision-making and the stamina to work through a full-length assessment.
A practical countdown plan has three parts:
Build a sustainable pace around clinical work. For example, you could schedule a few question sessions on weekdays and a longer review block on a day off. The key is to make missed sessions visible and reschedule them, not let them disappear from the plan.
The PANRE Review Course includes five full-length 240-question mock exams. These can help you rehearse the length of the traditional exam and identify content areas that need additional work. The same question review can support broad clinical preparation for PANRE-LA, while your quarterly assessment schedule remains the primary deadline.
The PANRE Review Course with Gift Card is $499.99 for 30 months of access. It includes more than 2,500 board-style practice questions across 15 body-system question modules, five full-length 240-question mock exams, high-yield lectures, and downloadable slides.
The up to 100 AAPA Category 1 CME credits apply to the PANRE Review Course only, through the PANRE Clinical Review Module. They do not apply to the Pharmacology course. The AAPA reference number is CME-2016187, with approval valid August 26, 2026, through August 26, 2027. Claim only the credit commensurate with your participation and follow the course’s completion requirements.
You can add a paid Amazon or Apple gift card in tiers from $100 to $1,500 at checkout. These are paid add-ons, not free gifts: the selected gift card cost is added to the course price, and the full purchase runs through your CME funds in one transaction. Gift cards are emailed within 2–3 business days, and gift card packages are nonrefundable. Check your employer’s CME policy before purchasing.
Buy two or more CME courses and save 20% automatically; gift card add-ons stay at face value. For broader access, Total Program Access covers all 14 modules for $2,999.99.
Nurse practitioners should verify with their state board of nursing whether AAPA Category 1 credit is accepted for their requirements. Acceptance varies by state.
Your patient is a 58-year-old with a painful, unilateral vesicular rash over the right thoracic dermatome that began 36 hours ago. The patient is immunocompetent and has no ocular involvement. Vital signs: HR 82, BP 132/78, RR 16, SaO₂ 99% on room air. What is the most appropriate management?
A. Begin oral valacyclovir
B. Prescribe topical corticosteroid alone
C. Start oral cephalexin
D. Defer treatment unless the rash spreads
Correct answer: A. Begin oral valacyclovir.
The presentation is consistent with uncomplicated herpes zoster, and antiviral treatment is most useful when started early. Valacyclovir is an appropriate oral option. Topical corticosteroid alone does not treat VZV; cephalexin is not indicated without evidence of bacterial superinfection; and waiting for spread delays treatment. In a classic presentation, routine imaging or broad laboratory testing is unlikely to change management and adds cost. Reserve testing for atypical or uncertain cases.
Use the PANRE Review Course with Gift Card to combine board-style preparation with the course’s eligible CME activity. Preview the material with the PANRE test drive. For additional question practice, explore the PAtopia web test drive, PAtopia for iOS, or PAtopia on Google Play. If you have used PANCE prep courses, the same habits of regular question practice and deliberate review can support your PANRE preparation, but align your schedule to the PANRE format you selected.
